Crónicas sociales is a reference text on 19th century Cuban literature. It contains collected Martí’s articles on social and political issues in different Latin American nations.

José Martí began his training at the College of San Anacleto, then studied at the Municipal School for Boys. In 1868 he began working for an independent newspaper, which caused his imprisonment and later exile to Spain. In 1873 he went to Zaragoza and graduated in law, philosophy, and letters. By 1880 he lived in New York and organized the War of Independence in his home country. He gave speeches, wrote articles and poems, conspired, and founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party. In 1895, at the beginning of the War of Independence, he went to Cuba and died in combat.
