El Intruso (The Intruder) by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, describes in detail the working conditions of the Basque iron mining in the vicinity of Triano. The novel is, perhaps, the most political of Blasco Ibáñez. Starring Luis Aresti, described in symmetry with Dr. Areilza, the doctor at the Triano mining hospital. The social conflicts that shaped the modern Vizcaya, and that confronted the old Carlists, affiliated with the newly founded nationalist party, and supported by the Jesuits of Deusto, with the mining proletariat and the blast furnaces, while they remained in the middle of the liberal bourgeois play heavily in this novel.
On October 11, 1903 thousands of people met in Bilbao, it was Sunday and the day of the patron saint of Vizcaya, the Virgin of Begoña. The incident unleashed a series of events that had an enormous influence on modern Vizcaya.
